Residents urge more local housing help; Girls' Dust thanks council for support

Two members of the public spoke during the agenda-related comments section about housing needs and community programs.

Evelyn Mickle, who said she has lived in Opelika for nearly 42 years, asked the council to provide or publicize housing options for working women and for veterans or former service members who are homeless or at risk. Mickle said she had seen large housing developments but had not observed smaller, affordable options for single women and said she was concerned that some veterans were being directed to neighboring cities rather than assisted locally. Mickle asked the council to provide information about local assistance and resources.

Tiffany Gibson, representing Girls' Dust Inc., thanked the mayor and council for including the organization in the budget and for a recent appropriation. Gibson said Girls' Dust serves about 100–120 girls; about 60% attend Opelika city schools. She said the organization meets at Covington Recreation Center and that parents also use meeting space. Gibson said Girls' Dust will hold a career and leadership conference in February at the Marriott (previously held at the Auburn Conference Center) with presenters from the State Department of Education, Auburn University and Southern Union, and she said the program would include career exposure for girls likely to enter the workforce directly after high school. Gibson also said she expected a Miss America appearance at the conference but framed that as not yet finalized.
