City leaders said the combination of those items produced the bulk of the requested change order.
Why it matters: The project uses a mix of MPO (Metropolitan Planning Organization) funding and city bond proceeds. The mayor said the additional cost is a “tough blow” to capital budgets but that the city can absorb it by deferring lower-priority capital items. The mayor noted the project has consumed significant city funds since the MPO allocation was made in 2015 and urged residents to view the completed work once it reopens.
City staff said final concurrence from the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) will be required as part of the closeout process. The mayor and staff emphasized that minor final adjustments could still arise during MDOT’s final review but they do not expect further large increases.
The board approved the change order on a roll-call vote.
