Commission approves $89,000 task order to retime city traffic signals

The West Fargo City Commission approved Task Order No. 5 with Bolton & Mink Inc. for $89,000 to review and retime the city's traffic signals and recommend operational improvements.
"About every five years, we go through a process where we retime the signals," Dan Hansen, city engineer, told commissioners, noting the city has added signals and changed traffic patterns since the last retiming. Bolton & Mink is the city's consultant for traffic signals and will collect data, evaluate each signal and return timing recommendations.
Hansen said the retiming work will include recently installed signals such as Bluestem at 20th Avenue by Costco and will be coordinated with a planned summer project to adjust turn lanes on Ninth and Veterans. He also said signals on Main Avenue are owned and operated by the North Dakota Department of Transportation and that any timing modifications for Main Avenue will require DOT coordination. "We do need to coordinate with the DOT if we're gonna make any modifications to the timing of those lights," Hansen said.
Commissioner Olsen moved to approve Task Order No. 5 for $89,000; Commissioner Jorgensen seconded. The motion carried on a voice vote.
Hansen said the task order is well below the $375,000 placeholder in the 2024 CIP and that the work is a value to the city because of changes in traffic patterns and newly added signals.
