Fire Chief LaRoche gave the Kankakee Fire Department report to the Kankakee City Public Safety Committee on Tuesday (date not specified), detailing January expenditures, emergency medical service (EMS) calls and fire‑prevention activity.
LaRoche told the committee the department’s expenditures for the month totaled $76,077.84. “A large expenditures for the month were our EMS bill invoice that we pay on a monthly basis,” he said, and he listed several items included in the monthly spending. He also reported five structure fires in January with a reported combined loss of $77,000.
On EMS activity, LaRoche said the department responded to about 405 EMS calls in January, including calls for breathing problems (60), traffic accidents (13), falls (25), behavioral health problems (26), chest pain (16), one gunshot and one suspected overdose. He reported the department turned over 16 ALS calls to contracted providers Elite and Riverside during the month.
LaRoche’s fire‑prevention office logged four public education events and conducted 120 fire‑life inspections and reinspections in January. The department installed 62 smoke detectors and 26 carbon monoxide detectors during the month and said it had purchased an additional 100 CO detectors to distribute as available.
On billing, LaRoche presented a fire‑billing report for December and an EMS gross‑billing figure that he read from the department materials. Committee members did not question the billing methodology during the meeting.
The committee approved payment of the fire department bills, $76,077.84, after a motion to pay. Roll call recorded Alderman Jones—Aye; Alderman O'Brien—Aye; Alderman Swanson—Aye; Alderman Navaros—Aye; Alderman Cobbs—Aye; other aldermen recorded on the roll call also supported payment. The committee then moved on to community risk reduction and other reports.
