Greene County approves letters of support for Comcast, NextLink and Watch broadband proposals

Greene County commissioners voted to approve letters of support for three broadband grant proposals from Comcast, NextLink Communications and Watch. The action was intended to help the vendors’ grant or bid applications and does not by itself authorize any construction or funding commitments by the county.
County Attorney Marvin described three separate proposals: multiple Comcast projects, a NextLink project and a Watch proposal. Marvin said NextLink’s submission included “an interesting perk” — connecting community anchor institutions that do not already have gigabit service to a gigabit network at no charge. Marvin identified possible anchor institutions such as fire stations and community centers as candidates for that offer.
A single motion was used to approve the letters of support. Commissioners asked no substantive follow-up questions at the meeting; Heather was asked to ensure the letters reflect the vendors’ proposals before submission.
