Homewood public-works staff told the committee on Feb. 3 that a replacement vacuum truck became available when another city canceled an order, and the committee voted to approve a transfer from the city's designated 7-cent gas-tax fund to purchase the vehicle.
Public-works presenter (identified in the meeting as Mr. Squires) said the city's remaining vacuum trucks are older models (circa 1997) and that the available unit is a 2024-model multipurpose vacuum truck that operates with a single operator. He said a newly ordered truck now has roughly an 18to20-month lead time, making the immediate-availability opportunity urgent.
Squires described the truck as a larger, more capable vacuum that complements the street sweeper and can pick up material the sweeper cannot. He said the unit uses the same engine and transmission family the city already uses and carries a 100,000-mile warranty for the driveline components.
Committee members asked where the money would come from. Staff said they located an attorney-general opinion that allows use of money in the 7-cent gas-tax fund for this purpose; the funds are available in the designated fund. The committee moved and approved a transfer of approximately $283,000 to purchase the truck; the motion passed 4-0 and the item will go to the full council on Monday night for final action.
Item details recorded in the meeting: vehicle model year described as 2024, price given as about $283,000, the truck will replace two older vacuums and surplus those units for sale in the future.
