IAFF Local 2487 announces fund‑raiser and negotiations; district updates stations, academy and lessons from recent fires

Jim Klauser, president of International Association of Fire Fighters Local 2487, told the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District board the union’s ‘‘Guns and Hoses’’ golf tournament will take place April 17 and will benefit the Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation. Klauser said the event is open to the public and that the local has opened contract negotiations for the coming year. He also thanked local leaders who alerted the union to regional consolidation discussions and said labor will participate in the upcoming meeting.
Interim Fire Chief Dale Wei and staff provided operational updates for January and February 2025. Chief Wei said Fire Station 37 Phase 2—an addition of about 1,400 square feet of apparatus bay/storage and a watch desk—is progressing on schedule, with demolition of the old apparatus bay and dirt-compaction testing complete; the district expects to occupy the addition by November barring unforeseen delays. A planned groundbreaking for Station 35 (Apple) was delayed from the planned date because of weather.
On regional fires, Chief Wei reviewed lessons learned from a locally referenced Davis fire and from large events in Los Angeles, noting the district conducted an after-action report following the Davis incident to identify notification and response improvements. He said some large incidents can generate widespread automatic notifications that reach many unaffected people; in contrast, the district’s earlier responses used more-targeted perimeter software. Chief Wei also noted the district will begin supplemental budget requests ahead of the final budget meeting in May.
The Capital City Regional Fire Academy recently graduated five recruits (class 24‑2) with participation from seven agencies; the recruits will receive an additional 100 hours of TMFPD-specific training and then begin a one-year probationary assignment rotating among stations. Chief Wei also reminded the board there will be no March Board of Fire Commissioner meeting.
