Hamblen County approves first round of opioid-abatement grants totaling $162,140

County Mayor Chris Cutshall told the Finance Committee the Opioid Abatement Committee reviewed applications and recommended funding after a competitive process. He said the awards are the committee’s first round of disbursements from the county’s opioid-abatement allocation.
What was approved The committee asked the commission to approve the following awards: $85,000 to Breath of Life Ministries (men’s home); $10,000 to the Hamblen County Substance Abuse Coalition; and $67,140 to Stepping Out. The commission voted to approve the recommendations; the meeting record shows the motion carried.
Why it matters: These awards represent the county’s initial local distribution of opioid-abatement dollars, directed toward treatment, recovery and coalition activities identified in applicant proposals.
Process, accountability and next steps Mayor Cutshall said the local Opioid Abatement Committee reviewed applications and will hold the awardees accountable to the uses described in their applications. The committee’s recommendation was brought to the Finance Committee for approval; the motion passed at that committee meeting.
Ending: The committee indicated award recipients will be expected to provide documentation on program uses and that future rounds of funding may follow as the county continues to administer settlement proceeds.
