A Beaver County department head said the county will close the recycling center on Mondays beginning in March because of staffing shortages, and asked residents to sort materials correctly to avoid extra work and costs.
The department head told commissioners during the department-heads report that one long-time recycling-center employee retired “effective yesterday,” leaving the county with insufficient staff to operate full weekday services and to service other shredding and collection responsibilities. “With one person in the facility due to retirement, it just will not be possible to service all of the locations,” the department head said.
County staff emphasized that employees currently correct improperly sorted materials placed in the wrong containers; that cleanup takes “some hours” each weekend, and that the corrections help keep processing fees down when materials leave county sites. A resident who spoke during the meeting said the routine mis-sorting was frustrating for frequent users of the center and asked the public to “please if you’re gonna recycle, do it the right way so you’re not creating more waste and more time and money, fixing up the mess we’re making.”
The department head also said the county handles document shredding requests for the district justice offices and other courthouse functions and that those services contributed to the staffing strain. The county will keep cardboard and some bins available for public access on Mondays, but regular staffing and drop-off services will be paused until the position is filled.
As part of the report, the department head announced the Solid Waste Advisory Committee’s spring meeting is expected Feb. 28 at 1:30 p.m. and that a public agenda will be posted online within a week.
The county did not provide a specific date for filling the vacant position or additional operational detail beyond the March start for Monday closures. The commissioners moved on to other business and later recessed for an executive session on personnel and contract matters.
