Manchester student urges board to restore midterms and finals to better prepare students for college

Eliza Khan, a junior at Memorial High School and the student member of the School Committee, used a public-comment slot during the Jan. 27 meeting to urge board members to bring back midterm and final exams in high schools.
Khan told the committee that students understand midterms and finals are unpopular but said they build valuable study habits, time management and test-taking skills needed for college. "We must... implement the midterms and finals back into the school district," she said.
Khan said friends now in college reported feeling unprepared for high-stakes exams and suggested restoring end-of-course assessments would better prepare students for postsecondary expectations. The student member asked board and staff to raise the issue during the Teaching and Learning Committee discussion scheduled the following day.

Committee members acknowledged the comment and noted that the Teaching and Learning Committee agenda includes related curriculum and assessment topics; the superintendent and committee members said the matter will be addressed in the appropriate committee setting.
