A St. Mary's County commissioner said Leonard Hall military school will close at the end of the 2024 calendar year and that county officials have known the school’s planned closure since at least the end of the previous school year.
"We've known since at least, the end of last school year that the school was going to close at the end of this 2024 calendar year," the commissioner said.
The commissioner acknowledged the emotional response from alumni and parents, and suggested that perceptions of military schools as punitive may have contributed to Leonard Hall’s decline. "I'm sad to see Leonard Hall go. I think, I think the stigma of military school being a form of punishment as education, may have contributed a little bit to, to their demise," the commissioner said.
The speaker also said reports that an individual received only one week's notice had circulated, and urged residents to contact commissioners or county staff for accurate information rather than relying solely on social media.
Why it matters: Leonard Hall’s closure affects alumni, parents and stakeholders tied to the school’s operations. The commissioner framed the closure as known to county officials for months and urged direct contact with the commission for details.
