Carter County commissioners voted unanimously Thursday to accept federal assistance from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) under the Emergency Watershed Protection (EWP) program to stabilize creek and river banks and remove limited debris at identified sites.
The NRCS assessment, presented at the commission meeting, identified 52 eligible sites across the county that primarily require bank stabilization rather than bulk debris removal. NRCS estimated those stabilization projects at about $2 million and said the agency will forward a contract for the county to sign within roughly 10 days. The agreement will require the county to decide whether to use county crews or hire contractors to complete the work; NRCS said once the contract is signed the county would have 220 days to fulfill the work.
