Board approves updated airport layout plan to support terminal and taxiway work

Middlesex County supervisors on Feb. 4 unanimously approved an updated Airport Layout Plan that includes a terminal building addition, a taxiway extension and an expanded tie-down area.
County officials and consultants said the updated ALP reflects existing conditions and county growth plans for the next 20–30 years and is necessary for pursuing state aviation funding. The ALP narrative in the agenda packet explains why changes are needed and describes how the plan accommodates aviation and non-aviation uses at the airport’s outskirts.
Officials said the state considers the ALP a long-range document and that the county does not need to update it annually; updating now ensures pending improvements and the county’s application for state airport funding will be consistent with the plan. County staff said they are targeting submission of required materials to the state by early March so the Virginia Aviation Board can consider the project during its May meeting and, if approved, include it at approximately the 90% funding level.
The airport committee recommended approval of the ALP before it reached the board. Supervisors made the motion to approve the ALP and voted unanimously to authorize the county administrator to proceed with state submittals.
