Trustees identify student mental-health needs and campus staffing as barriers to instruction

Trustees said increasing student behavioral and mental-health needs are consuming principals’ and assistant principals’ time and undermining their ability to observe instruction and support teachers.
Trustee Josh Orfeld said principals and administrators are often diverted to discipline and campus incidents, limiting classroom monitoring and instructional oversight. "You also have your administrators that can't go into the classrooms and monitor the classroom and do their walk throughs because they're dealing with discipline all day long," Orfeld said.
The nut graf: trustees argued the district should consider staffing models that put designated mental-health or discipline-focused staff on campuses—so principals can focus on instructional leadership—and asked staff to propose models, costs and possible pilot sites.
Participants described examples of student incidents and increasing complexity of needs at early grades. Trustees suggested options including campus-based mental-health counselors dedicated to behavioral support, deans of students focused on discipline, and reallocating central-office duties to free principals for instructional leadership.
