Mayor Maddox read a proclamation at the Tuscaloosa City Council meeting proclaiming February 2025 as National Parent Leadership Month and asked residents to support parent leadership initiatives.
The proclamation stated that parent leadership strengthens families, helps prevent child abuse and neglect, and is successful when parents receive support and training. Dora Drake joined Mayor Maddox and council members at the podium as the council presented the proclamation to local parent leaders and representatives of the Alabama Parent Leadership Network.
Pastor Brenda Cox, introduced by Councilor Wilson, described an upcoming caregiver appreciation event scheduled for Saturday at the McDonough Hughes Center, saying organizers planned music, free food (spaghetti, string beans, dessert, water and sodas) and requested donations to “give them at least a couple of hours of release.” Cox said donations will support building “a five‑bedroom home for senior adult women with intellectual disability.”
Madonna Williams, representing the Alabama Parent Leadership Network’s Tuscaloosa cohort, thanked the council for the recognition and said the group would be active this month with events on the 13th and 18th in Montgomery. A parent leader who spoke at the podium said, “A parent is a child’s first role model,” and thanked the council for the honor.
The proclamation was read aloud and presented; no separate roll‑call vote or motion to adopt the proclamation is recorded in the meeting transcript.
