The Natural Resource Board voted Feb. 8 to approve the champion assignments for the City of Sebastian’s Sustainable Sebastian Implementation Plan 2, a multi‑goal five‑year strategy covering plastics reduction, landscape practices, cleanups, energy reduction, stormwater and active‑transportation initiatives.
City staff member Felicia presented the action plan and named board champions for each major goal. Board members discussed specific items including a recognition program to reduce single‑use plastics, restoring a champion‑tree program and continuing annual cleanup events such as the Treasure Coast Waterway Cleanup. The plan also calls for developing a public poll to identify community priorities, updates to the city’s sustainable event guide, and exploring predictive analytics to inform planning for climate impacts.
Board members asked for timing adjustments on poll tabulation (suggested shifting due dates to allow additional time for paper responses) and discussed using social media for digital surveys. Matthew Thomas and other members emphasized the need to craft a short public survey for Earth Day to collect resident priorities.
After discussion, a motion to approve the Sustainable Sebastian Implementation Plan 2 champions was moved, seconded and approved. Chairman Charles Stadelman announced, "K. The ayes have it, and it's passed." The board instructed staff to proceed with the assigned champions and to return with updates as tasks progress.
