County to begin courthouse metal-detector screening next week after staff training

County security staff told the Dubois County commissioners that new courthouse screening — including a scanner and metal detectors at the east entrance — will begin a phased rollout next week after training. Security staff said they will "go live on Monday, February 10."
A county representative described a soft open and staff training scheduled in the days before the full launch; one official said the week would operate as a soft-open period to work out procedures and that starting Monday the screening would be a full process "1 way in, 1 way out." Officials encouraged visitors to leave bulky items in vehicles and said courthouse staff will manage the screening workflow and direct visitors through the process.
The county said the goal is to protect the public, courthouse employees and courts by reducing the chance that bulky or hazardous items enter the courtroom area. Staff acknowledged the rollout will require patience as the public and employees adjust to new procedures.
No formal policy change was adopted at the meeting; staff described training and timing and said questions from the public would be addressed during the rollout.
