Village approves two commemorative benches for 10 Mile Park; one paid 50% by Krieger family donation

The Brown Deer Village Board on Feb. 4 approved a request to install two commemorative benches in 10 Mile Park, including one to honor Carl Krieger and a second to represent the community.
Staff said Noble Winds provides benches made from recycled windmill materials and that the benches can be artistically customized. Village staff proposed funding one bench entirely from existing funds designated for 10 Mile Park and financing the second bench through a 50/50 match between the Krieger family (and donations they raise) and the village.
The board approved the purchase with village expense limits: the village’s expense for the first bench shall not exceed $5,500, and the village’s cost for the second bench shall not exceed $11,000. Staff and trustees discussed long-term maintenance: staff estimated a service life of about 20 to 30 years and said the village would need to budget for repairs, graffiti removal and potential replacement at end of life.
Trustees also discussed the bench design (a swinging bench was shown in renderings distributed with the packet) and agreed that if the donor preferred a stationary bench for maintenance reasons the village could choose that alternative.
Motion and vote: The consent motion to approve the donation/bench purchase was moved by Trustee Johnson and seconded by Trustee Woods and carried unanimously.
Why it matters: The project adds public art and seating to a neighborhood park and includes a local fundraising component that supports a classroom through proceeds retained by the tent operator in earlier vendor activity.
