School committee unanimously approves AVEC gifted program trip to Camden Conference

The Lewiston School Committee voted unanimously on Feb. 3 to approve a field trip request for four students in the AVEC Contemporary Issues (gifted and talented) program to attend the Camden Conference, Feb. 21–23. The trip ties the class work each year to the Camden Conference theme; this year’s topic is "Democracy Under Threat: A Global Perspective."
Keith Levesque, the Lewiston High School social-studies teacher who advises the Contemporary Issues program, told the committee the Camden Conference covers speakers from national and international universities and journalistic organizations and that the Camden Conference Education Committee covers conference and lodging costs through donations. Levesque asked for committee approval to take the students; the motion passed unanimously.
The students will stay at the Rockland Harbor Hotel and attend sessions at the Camden Opera House, Levesque said. Committee members expressed support for experiential learning opportunities for gifted students and thanked Levesque for organizing the trip.
