The official said the district recorded “over a 30 absences today” among staff and had several additional staff members who reported they would be absent the following day. “We feel like it's the best decision to go ahead and close school for Wednesday and Thursday,” the official said, adding the district would treat the two days as NTI (nontraditional instruction) day number 5 and day number 6.
District leaders said the extra days will allow custodial staff to “deep clean” and disinfect facilities “at the highest level possible” before students and remaining staff return. The official said the pause should also give sick staff and students “a few days to rest, get some medicine, and get to feeling better so that we can really finish out the week strong.”
Officials reiterated that classes are expected to resume Friday and reminded families that NTI day number 5 is Wednesday and NTI day number 6 is Thursday. “We look forward to seeing everyone on Friday,” the official said.
The announcement did not specify which schools in Shelby County are affected beyond the districtwide closure, any guidance for extracurricular activities, nor whether childcare or meal services would be available during the closure.
