Superintendent (unnamed) told the Nantucket School Committee on Feb. 4 that district enrollment remained unchanged for the month at 1,728 students and presented several student awards.
"We have had no change in enrollment this month. We stayed at 1,728 students," the superintendent said during the superintendent's report. The superintendent presented the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents Certificate of Academic Excellence to senior Boyan Kalpazanov and two National School Development Council awards to seniors Sue Perriner and Rhianna Cranston.
The superintendent also addressed recent federal executive orders and said the district has been reviewing guidance from state authorities and professional associations. "There have been multiple webinars, resources, and from the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents . . . The Nantucket Public Schools continues to uphold our mission of providing a safe, inclusive learning environment for all students," the superintendent said.
Other updates: The superintendent announced extracurricular and student-life items including the first Tri-M Music Honor Society chapter induction (seven students), a new photography club, a Tall Ships opportunity for four NHS students (registration open through April 18 for a May 22–26 trip), and a student spaghetti fundraiser for the Europe trip in April. The committee also heard that a public hearing on staggered starts has been tabled until staff complete further investigation; a Feb. 18 workshop will cover district midyear improvement-plan updates, student-information policies and immigrant-student rights.
Ending: The superintendent closed the report and the committee moved to other agenda items; no policy changes were adopted on Feb. 4.
