Commissioners back four CRTPO candidate projects, oppose Waxhaw Parkway segment

On Feb. 3 the Union County Board of Commissioners approved a slate of candidate projects to submit to the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization’s (CRTPO) long-range Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) and directed its CRTPO representative to oppose a Waxhaw Parkway segment that crosses unincorporated county land.
Senior planner Bjarne Hanson presented the county’s set of candidate projects, which included: extending NC 84 from the existing widening to East Airport Road in coordination with Wesley Chapel; widening Old Charlotte Highway from the current project south to Rogers Road (coordinated with Monroe and Indian Trail); a Marshall-area bypass project that could be a toll facility consistent with US 74/Monroe Expressway cross sections; and intersection safety and capacity improvements at Idlewild/Mill Grove/Old Charlotte Highway and Indian Trail/Fairview.
Hanson said projects will be evaluated by CRTPO on congestion, safety, cost-benefit and community impact; the CRTPO process evaluates candidate projects through spring and finalizes the plan by the following year. The county added that Waxhaw’s proposed Waxhaw Parkway segment that would cross Mineral Springs and unincorporated Union County is opposed by Union County and Mineral Springs; the board voted to continue opposing that segment. The motion to approve the candidate recommendations (with continued opposition to the Waxhaw Parkway segment) passed by voice vote.
The vote approves submitting local candidate projects to the regional planning process; funding and schedules will be set through CRTPO and state processes.
