At the Jan. 13 Pearland City Council meeting, resident John Jackson urged the council to address life-safety concerns after discovering magnetic locks and exit signage at a city recreation facility that he said did not meet building or fire code requirements.
Jackson told the council he had raised the issue previously during a pool renovation and described possible violations including dead-end corridors greater than 20 feet for assembly occupancies and a common path-of-travel exceeding the 75-foot limit he referenced. He also said the facility appears to lack a voice evacuation system. Jackson said he had discussed the matter with the fire chief and the director of parks and recreation earlier the same day and asked the council to weigh in.
Mayor and staff responded that codes change periodically and that life-safety issues are important. City staff (Trent and the marshal's office) said they have discussed internal items and would provide an update to the council on next steps.
No formal action or motion was taken; staff committed to investigate Jackson's concerns and report back to the council.
