Milton council extends Deerfield Highway 9 zoning moratorium through July 7, 2025

Milton City Council on Feb. 3 adopted a resolution extending an existing moratorium on the acceptance of applications for use permits, rezonings, zoning condition amendments or other zoning approvals for property within the Deerfield Highway 9 area through July 7, 2025.
City Attorney Jeff Strickland told council the extension is intended to pause consideration of applications under the older regulatory scheme while the city finalizes replacement zoning regulations for the area. "It automatically will expire July. It can certainly expire by further action of the city council or it will automatically expire upon, your approval of, substitute regulations regarding this, area," Strickland said.
Strickland estimated formal codification of the replacement regulations would take "about 3 to 4 months" under a best‑case timeline, but he cautioned that the schedule assumes there are no substantive changes or unexpected delays. Council members asked whether any businesses had claimed harm from the moratorium; Strickland said a few entities had approached the city with development plans that do not align with current zoning, but he did not report formal claims of hardship.
Councilman Cookerly moved to approve agenda item number 25‑034; Councilman Jacobus seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
