Lake City council approves three $15,000 FDOT traffic-enforcement grants after public questions

The Lake City Council voted unanimously Monday to accept three traffic-enforcement grants from the Florida Department of Transportation State Safety Office that will reimburse officer overtime for impaired-driving checkpoints, occupant-protection (seat-belt) enforcement and speed/aggressive-driving patrols.

Council adopted the three separate resolutions — 2025-020 (impaired driving), 2025-021 (occupant protection/seat belts) and 2025-022 (speed and aggressive driving) — after extended public comment urging more transparency about how the money would be used and where enforcement would occur.

Councilmember Carter said the grants are routine but supported requests from residents for better explanation. City Manager Rosenthal explained the grants are reimbursements for overtime already incurred when officers are assigned targeted enforcement. “Each one of the grants is $15,000; it is to reimburse us for overtime,” Rosenthal told the council.
