Operators and council members at a Walton County tourism workshop called for changes in solid-waste service and enforcement to match resort-area needs.
A vacation-rental operator said, "In a resort community, trash pickup should be 7 days a week," arguing private companies and some resort developments already provide daily or on‑checkout pickups. Several speakers said current schedules and scattered curbside cans create blight and cause operational headaches when guests check out on noncollection days.
Members proposed options including requiring rental companies to arrange garbage pickup on guest checkout days, exploring concierge-style collection in high-use corridors (Scenic 98 and coastal neighborhoods), and negotiating contract terms with waste haulers to provide more frequent service in resort zones. One participant asked whether the county's existing 1% discretionary tax could be used to subsidize enhanced pick-up in resort areas.
No contract changes were approved at the workshop; attendees asked staff and commissioners to investigate whether existing waste contracts can be adjusted to provide higher-frequency collection in resort areas and whether enforcement and education can reduce trash left in public lots.
