Education committee refers booster-club debt review to budget committee; no county funding approved

The Sumner County Education Committee voted unanimously Feb. 3 to send a compiled list of nonprofit booster-club debts to the county budget committee for detailed review, without approving any payments or setting aside county funds.

The committee’s referral follows a lengthy discussion of outstanding debts tied to booster-funded athletic facilities and equipment. Dr. Langford, director of schools, presented updates on multiple athletic projects and the list of active debts and answered commissioners’ questions about what the money had purchased and who holds outstanding notes.

Why it matters: commissioners said they wanted more documentation — including which debts are held by 501(c)(3) organizations versus individuals, itemized breakdowns of what was purchased with borrowed funds, and the identity of parties holding promissory notes — before making any appropriation decisions.
