Elko Volunteer Fire Department asks Sumner County to circulate proposed contract to legislators before budget process

Wayden Brown, who identified himself as representing the Elko Volunteer Fire Department and gave a Portland address, told the commission the department thought the agenda item related to a previously proposed contract. Brown said an ad hoc committee and the fire chief were in agreement with the proposed contract and that the department needs sustained funding as the county grows.
"Bottom line is that we need to continue functioning and try to move our... and serve the public," Wayden Brown said, asking the commission to advance the contract so funding can follow.
Another speaker who identified himself as Johnny and said he serves as a contact for the ad hoc committee urged the commission to act so that by the time the budget committee meets in July the contract will have been reviewed by legislators. "All we're asking of today... is just for you all to send the contract that you have already been sent to the legislators so they can look over over the next couple of months," Johnny said.
A commissioner present told the meeting they were not prepared to act, citing a recent family bereavement and saying the packet may not include the contract. The record does not show a formal motion, vote or deadline set at the meeting.
Speakers said they were not asking the commission to allocate money immediately but to forward the contract for legislative review so it can be considered ahead of budget planning.
The commission did not take formal action on the request during the meeting; commissioners asked for time to review the packet and for staff to clarify whether the proposed contract was included.
