Board reviews proposed 2026–27 and 2027–28 academic calendars; decisions due in March

Assistant Superintendent Nate Swenson and Executive Director of Human Resources Sonia Saylor presented two proposed academic calendars for 2026–27 and 2027–28. Both calendars begin the week before Labor Day to allow more summer construction time; district staff said the district expects more than $8 million in building projects over the coming six years and wanted additional summer days for work.
The calendars prioritize educational continuity: full instructional weeks where possible, distributed student breaks (MEA, Thanksgiving, two-week winter break and spring break) and three teacher data days (the day after semester one, the day after the last student day, and one floater). Both options include a PD day aligned to cultural observances — Sept. 21, 2026 (Yom Kippur) in the first year and Oct. 1, 2027 (the Friday before Rosh Hashanah) in the second — and place no‑student days on general election days and certain primary/primary‑adjacent dates for safety and scheduling reasons.
Swenson said the calendars aim to balance semester lengths (84 and 85 days in semester one across the two proposals) and to align non‑student days so support services schedules do not concentrate on Mondays or Fridays. The board will consider the calendars for action at its March meeting.
