Board ratifies 2024–26 contract for buildings, grounds and maintenance workers; two-year package totals $9.43 million

The Edina Public Schools Board approved a tentative collective bargaining agreement with Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 284 covering custodial, grounds and building maintenance staff for July 1, 2024, through June 30, 2026.
Executive Director of Human Resources Sonia Saylor and Director of Finance Mark Woodard presented highlights: step advancements for eligible employees in both years, a 7% hourly wage increase in year one and a 2.8% increase in year two, and higher district monthly health-insurance contributions beginning Jan. 1, 2025 (an increase of $73.57 for single plans, $24.60 for single-plus-one plans and $25.43 for family plans). The agreement also raised monthly differentials for first-class and chief boiler-license holders and adjusted years-of-service thresholds for vacation eligibility so some custodial employees can earn leave earlier.
Woodard and Saylor said the two-year total package equals $9,431,256 (an increase of $619,814 over prior years); under the Minnesota School Boards Association costing model the two‑year percentage is 7.99%, which the board’s negotiating parameters authorized. Board members asked about turnover; HR reported turnover has declined as wages became more competitive and many employees have long tenure.
The board approved the agreement by voice vote; the transcript records the motion, a second, and the chair’s declaration that the agreement was approved.
