Council conditionally appoints Laura Hespin as police officer; Civil Service certification noted

The Columbus City Council on Feb. 3 conditionally appointed Laura Hespin as a police officer subject to successful completion of required tests and training.
City staff said the Civil Service Commission certified the candidate at its Aug. 20, 2024 meeting and that, under council rules, the normal two-week waiting period for appointing a police officer was waived. The appointment was described as a budgeted hire.
Laura Hespin introduced herself to the council after the vote and briefly described her path into law enforcement. “When I was working corrections for Platte County, I genuinely enjoyed it and wanted to further my career in this field,” she said. City staff said she has attended the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center, served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves for three years and is currently employed as a deputy sheriff at the Butler County Sheriff’s Office.
The council voted to approve the conditional appointment by voice vote with no recorded opposition.
The appointment is contingent on successful completion of the police department’s field training program and required tests; staff said the position is budgeted. The city will complete onboarding and training steps before the appointment becomes final.
