Representative Josh Wheeler told the committee he represents District 35 and introduced RS 31958, a sudden cardiac arrest awareness measure aimed at school districts. "This bill will basically ask our school districts to implement policies to make parents and coaches aware of symptoms and results of sudden cardiac arrest in student athletes," he said, adding that sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death among student athletes.
Wheeler told the panel the bill is budget neutral because the materials and training modules districts would use are already available online and can be tailored by districts. Committee members did not raise substantive objections and voted to introduce RS 31958.
The committee carried the motion to introduce the RS and scheduled no further action at the hearing. Committee members indicated they expect local school districts to adapt policies as appropriate and that any district-level costs would be handled with existing resources or district discretion.
