The Royal Oak Schools Board on Jan. 9 authorized a contract of $989,365.50 with True North Asphalt to replace pavement and complete traffic-improvement work at Royal Oak Middle School (ROMS), with a 10% contingency included to address unforeseen site conditions.
District staff and the board said the ROMS pavement replacement and traffic adjustments have been in planning for several years and include curb modifications and a permanent barrier system to replace temporary orange barriers used during drop-off and pick-up. Mark Paulus, the district’s owner’s representative, told trustees the construction plan reflects modifications made after staff observations during the first months of use.
Why it matters: The work is intended to improve vehicle flow and student safety during arrival and dismissal. Board members noted the project originated from a student-led effort to identify safety concerns in the ROMS parking and drop-off areas.
Funding and timing: Staff said the project will be paid from the district sinking fund and will begin immediately after the school year ends, with the goal of completing work before the 2025–26 school year starts.
Board action: Motion to authorize the superintendent to finalize and sign the contract with True North Asphalt for $989,365.50 with a 10% contingency was approved by roll-call vote.
