Board approves $13.58 million bid for Bates and Goodeth elementary upgrades including STEM smart labs

The Woodhaven-Brownstown School District Board of Education on Jan. 14 approved Bid Pack No. 8, a combined award recommendation of $13,579,967 to fund improvements at Bates and Goodeth elementary schools, the board was told. Funding for the project will come from proceeds of the 2021 bond.
Administrators and the district’s bond project team — which the board identified as including representatives from the two schools, Plant Moran, McCarthy & Smith, and GMB Architects — presented the recommended scope. The most significant work in the bid pack includes classroom additions, interior renovations, safety and security enhancements, improvements to common learning spaces, and installation of STEM “smart labs.” The motion to approve the bid pack carried on a voice vote.
Board members praised the planned smart labs. Board member Laura Barry said she was “super excited” about the recommendation and expressed anticipation that the labs will change how students learn. The district noted that the bid award recommendation includes site work, smart labs, contingency and related fees; the administration identified the funding source as the 2021 bond proceeds.
