The Cook County Board of Commissioners recorded the following actions during the regular meeting on Jan. 14, 2025.
- Conveyance to HRA (agenda item 4): Board approved conveyance of a county-owned parcel to the Cook County HRA for a Hamilton Habitat housing project; sale price shown as $1. (See separate article for background and debate.)
- Caribou Lake SSD public hearing (agenda item 5): Board set a public hearing for Feb. 11 at 9:00 a.m. to consider a special assessment for the Caribou Lake watershed SSD; staff will send individual notices to affected property owners. Packet shows a $250 payment covering 5 years; association and some speakers described the equivalent as $50 per year per property.
- Mill the Hill contract award (agenda item 7): Board awarded contract 1276 for the Mill the Hill and Associated Projects to the low bidder KGM Contractors; low bid listed in the packet as $11,561,762.20 (staff to finalize contract and schedule public outreach).
- Harborview preservation grant agreement (agenda item 8): Board approved by resolution a grant agreement between the Cook County HRA, Cook County, and Harborview LLC to preserve up to 22 units at Harborview Apartments for Section 8 voucher holders; Commissioner Gamble recused from the vote and the resolution passed with recorded ayes.
- Personnel actions (consent and separate motions): The board approved promotions noted in the packet, including promotion of Angelique Coleman to deputy sheriff investigator and confirmation of Neil Pedersen as assistant county attorney 2 (Pedersen had been introduced earlier in the meeting). One commissioner noted an interest in broader personnel and staffing-efficiency review.
- Temperance Trail preliminary plat (land services): Board approved the HRA-sponsored Temperance Trail preliminary plat (preliminary approval with 12 conditions recommended by the planning commission) to subdivide the parcel behind Birch Grove Community School for a mix of single-family and duplex units; final plat, septic design and covenants remain to be resolved.
- Fee-change public hearing (agenda item 9): Board set a public hearing for 9 a.m. on Feb. 25 to consider department fee changes; staff to publicize and allow additional departments to submit proposed fee changes.
- Audit engagement (agenda item 12): Board approved an engagement letter to contract with Redpath & Company for the county’s 2024 audit; staff said the base fee rose but overall cost was slightly down from prior year due to no new GASB implementation items.
Procedural notes: Most votes were recorded as unanimous “Aye” in the meeting audio; some items were discussed in depth (see separate articles on the Hamilton Habitat conveyance, Caribou Lake SSD and Mill the Hill contract award). The board also heard presentations and updates on emergency management initiatives, the HRA, LEC expansion, and other administrative matters.
