The East Baton Rouge Parish School Board on Jan. 9 approved a resolution appointing the board president to represent the school board on the parish ITEP (Industrial Tax Exemption Program) committee.
Public commenter Dr. Finney urged whoever is appointed to oppose using ITEP tax abatements to redirect property-tax revenue collected for school millages. Board members discussed the role and agreed the board president would serve as the district’s representative. A motion proposing that the board president serve carried on a roll-call vote.
Board members said the position requires members who can engage with both community and business representatives on tax-exemption requests and noted the importance of protecting school millage revenues that voters authorized.
