Shoshone Stewart elected president; Michael Goday chosen vice president of East Baton Rouge Parish School Board

Shoshone Stewart was elected president of the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board on Jan. 9, 2025, winning eight votes to one in a roll-call election during a special meeting. Michael Goday was elected vice president later in the session, prevailing five votes to four.
The leadership votes came during a meeting called as a special session of the board. The secretary conducted roll-call votes after nominations and a motion to close nominations was approved. The board recessed briefly so the newly elected officers could be sworn in before adjourning to the committee of the whole.
Board members nominated three candidates for president: Shoshone Stewart, Patrick Martin and Emily Soule. After the roll call, the secretary announced Stewart had eight votes and Martin one. For vice president, the board nominated Michael Goday and Emily Soule; the secretary announced Goday had five votes and Soule four.
Following the elections, Stewart thanked colleagues for their trust and said she looked forward to leading the board. Several board members offered brief remarks of gratitude to outgoing leadership and congratulations to Stewart and Goday. The board recessed to administer oaths and then reconvened for a committee meeting.
