Superintendent reports $50,000 school makeover, recognizes SROs; business office readies budget amendment

The superintendent opened district updates by announcing that the Bernie Center won a $50,000 school-makeover award from School Specialty; the superintendent said the prize included STEM materials and furniture and that students were enthusiastic when staff visited the remodeled space.
The superintendent also recognized law-enforcement staff and named four school resource officers assigned to the district: Tom Davis, Pat Miltello, Jimmy Cohen and Mark Javery. The superintendent noted law enforcement appreciation events and said safety — both physical and social-emotional — had been a recurring topic at a recent parent advisory committee meeting where Title I programming and bond planning were also discussed.
District staff also reported on student-teacher placements and university partnerships. Staff said the district hosted about 11 student teachers in the first semester and four for the second semester, with 11 interns in first semester and 12 in second semester (one a speech-and-language student). Universities represented this year included Central Michigan University (CMU), Concordia, Ferris State, Oakland University, Wayne State and Western Governors University. Staff said most placements were at the K–5 level and that the district is working to increase partnerships with universities, particularly Wayne State.
Kathy from the business office told the board the staff were working on W-2s and 1099s for payroll and that the business office is preparing a budget amendment targeted for board consideration in March; she also noted nutrition staff training scheduled for Jan. 29.
At the end of the meeting, a motion to adjourn was moved by Missus Ross with a supporting voice vote; the board chair called the question and the meeting was adjourned at 7:31 p.m.

Staff said a more formalized bond presentation and additional department reports would appear on the board’s Jan. 27 agenda and that follow-up materials (percentages for suspension data and multi-year gains-and-losses charts) would be circulated in a Friday update.
