Greene County commissioners accept $160,000 homeland security grant, approve appointments and set 2025 schedule

Greene County commissioners on Jan. 9 accepted a $160,000 homeland security grant and approved a set of routine county business including budget transfers, a contract amendment, appointments to boards and the county’s 2025 meeting schedule.

The grant award, announced during the board’s first regular meeting of 2025, came through the county’s emergency management channel. County staff said the county applied for $80,000 but the state awarded $160,000. The funds are intended to purchase mobile camera trailers; staff said they plan to buy three trailers (initially two were expected) and, if the state permits, use remaining funds to buy spare parts and accessories rather than return money to the state. The county administrator told the board each trailer would incur about $50 per month in Wi‑Fi charges and that the sheriff’s office prefers to decline an ongoing camera maintenance agreement for now.

Why it matters: county officials said mobile trailers can be deployed for large events and shared with regional law enforcement. The larger-than-expected award raises follow‑up questions about allowable uses of the extra funds and recurring operating costs.
