Palm Bay proclaims January 2025 Human Trafficking Awareness Month; local nonprofit describes services and needs

Mayor Rob Medina on Thursday proclaimed January 2025 as Human Trafficking Awareness Month in Palm Bay and designated Jan. 11 as National Human Trafficking Awareness Day in the city.
The mayor read the proclamation calling trafficking a “form of modern-day slavery” and highlighting local (and national) concerns about online exploitation, child victims and demand-side drivers. Kim Curry, executive director of New Life International, accepted the proclamation and described local survivor services: outreach and education, legal assistance to clear criminal records that impede housing and employment, and three local housing homes she described as full. Curry urged community support for fundraising events and volunteer efforts, and emphasized that large regional events can increase vulnerability; she described participating in task forces and law-enforcement briefings for major events.
Curry said the organization seeks funding for housing projects and volunteers to help expand survivor services. The mayor and council members acknowledged the proclamation and thanked local nonprofit partners for their work against trafficking.
