Hanover students honored for music, DECA and state championship cheer season

HANOVER, Mass. — The School Committee opened its Jan. 15 meeting with student recognitions, highlighting performing-arts and extracurricular achievements at Hanover High School.
Music and composition: Matthew Harden, who said he serves as chair of the Southeastern District, reported that 14 Hanover students participated in the senior district festival at New Bedford High School. Harden said three Hanover students earned all‑state recommendations. Student musician Ronan Bloom described the experience as an opportunity “to meet a bunch of new people, make great music, and just come together with a bunch of different schools from our district.” Harden also noted that a student composer’s piece was premiered by the high school band.
DECA: Brian Chico, the new DECA adviser, told the committee the newly formed chapter has 24 official members and that 18 students competed at the District 1 conference at the Quincy Marriott; Hanover brought home eight medals and two teams qualified for the state competition in Boston in late February. Chico said “medals get awarded for each of the top teams” and that two Hanover teams placed among the top finishers.
Cheer: Athletic director Scott Hutchison and other speakers celebrated the Hanover cheer team’s season. Hutchison described a sequence of invitationals, Patriot League and regional events where the team posted its highest scores ever and was crowned Division 3 state champion — the first such state title in Hanover history, according to the presentation.
Committee members praised students and staff for their leadership and coaching; several members asked to get photos for the district website and for banners to be placed in the gym.
