Mansfield High adopts 2025–26 program of studies; AP limits expanded, AP Precalculus added

What changed: Administrators said the major updates include a district-wide course-number reorganization (to make course codes consistent by department and grade), a revised approach to essential-college-prep (ECP) course naming (e.g., algebra 1 ECP, geometry ECP, Algebra 2A/B ECP), and a new AP Precalculus course for 11th–12th graders. The program also formalizes an expanded AP limit: one AP in 10th grade, up to four APs for juniors and up to five APs for seniors. The committee removed an earlier appeal process to add AP courses and said counselors will advise students about workload and scheduling.
Early college and dual enrollment: The district has secured a grant to pilot an early-college dual-enrollment partnership with Quincy College. Target classes under consideration include media/public speaking, psychology, personal finance and elements of English 11. Administrators said details remain to be finalized with Quincy College and the district will provide more information to families when available.
Low-enrollment deletions and technical changes: The program removes several courses that had historically failed to run because of low enrollment, including Hip Hop History and some specialized electives; administrators said elements of those topics remain embedded in other courses (for example, hip-hop material is retained in a history-of-rock unit). The district also separated tech-theater course levels and clarified AP and honors course criteria. Several course descriptions were revised to explicitly align with the 2023 MCAS-aligned standards to support graduation competency determinations.
Rationale and implementation: Staff said the AP-limit increases are intended to expand access for qualified students while counselors will continue to assess readiness and recommend appropriate placements. Math changes (adding AP Precalculus and adjusting Algebra 2 honors) were intended to create clearer pathways into college-level calculus without forcing students to double up on courses. The program passed with a committee vote; administrators will finalize scheduling and counselor advisement materials and publish the full program to families.
Vote: The committee approved the 2025–26 MHS Program of Studies, subject to minor edits, with a unanimous vote.
