Public commenters urge road‑safety outreach and raise concerns about local hospital closure

During the public comment period at the Feb. 3 Tahlequah City Council meeting, residents promoted a Town Hall Road Safety Day to be held Monday, Feb. 10 at the Armory and raised concerns about the closure of a local hospital.
One resident identified as Paige (organizer) invited families to the Town Hall Road Safety Day from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Armory, saying emergency services will display equipment including fire trucks, ambulances and a medevac helicopter and that the event will offer free light giveaways and door prizes. The speaker said the event is intended to encourage adults to complete surveys that will inform a transportation safety action plan tied to future grant funding, adding, “So we were awarded 200,000...we picked an engineering firm...form this plan. And then once you get it done, we can turn it into, or submit it for more grant money.”
During public comment, Dr. John Uzzo described concerns about the recent closure of Barnes Valley Hospital on Jan. 8 and urged council attention to keep specialists and services in the community. Uzzo said audits and trustee meetings related to the hospital were delinquent and called for the council’s help to preserve local health care capabilities.
Mayor Suzanne Myers and councilors acknowledged the comments. No council action was taken during the public‑comment period; staff and council did not announce specific policy follow‑up at the meeting.
