Pierce County Council approves appointments to external boards and commissions, 7-0

On Jan. 21, the Pierce County Council voted 7-0 to adopt Resolution R2024-267, which makes council appointments to external boards, commissions and agency seats for the coming year. The resolution was amended at the meeting to insert the list of appointees.

Council staff summarized that the resolution appoints council members to "a variety of external boards, commissions, committees, and other agencies" and includes a continuity provision stating appointees shall serve for the year 2025 or until a successor is appointed. There was no public comment on the resolution.

The amendment that inserted names was moved and seconded and carried. After the amended resolution was before the council, the clerk called the roll. The recorded votes were: Council member Ayala — aye; Council member Yombe — aye; Council member Herrera — aye; Council member Morel — aye; Council member Krueger — aye; Council member Denson — aye; Council member Hitchin — aye. The clerk announced the result as seven ayes, zero nays, and the resolution was adopted.

After adoption, the presiding officer thanked council members for agreeing to serve on outside boards and commissions, noting that "Some of these are actually pretty significant time commitments. They take time from your council work sometimes, but definitely from your family, and your communities, when you're asked to go to a variety of different meetings in different places and spaces." The presiding officer added that remote participation has made attendance easier in some cases but emphasized the time commitment required.

Ms. Long told the council she would not read every appointment aloud during the meeting but confirmed the amendment contains the list of appointees and reiterated the continuity language in the resolution. The adopted resolution takes effect immediately on the date of adoption.
