On Jan. 21, the Pierce County Council voted 7-0 to adopt Resolution R2024-266, establishing the council's standing committees and naming committee chairs, vice chairs and members for the 2025 calendar year.
The resolution, as amended, sets the council's standing committees as Rules and Operations; Community Development and Environment; Economic and Infrastructure Development; Health and Human Services; and Public Safety. Council staff said the amendment replaces a version of the resolution that left blanks for names with a named membership list.
Ms. Long, briefing the council, described the amendment as: "a Stryker amendment, removes the exhibit that has the blanks in it and replaces it with the one you see as the attachment to your memo." She said the resolution also contains a continuity provision providing that appointees will serve for the calendar year 2025 or until a successor is appointed.
The committee membership named in the amendment is as follows: Rules and Operations — Council member Hitchin, chair; Council member Herrera, vice chair; Council member Dunson, executive pro tem; Council member Ayala, alternate. Community Development and Environment — Council member Dunson, chair; Council member Yambe, vice chair; Council members Ayala, Krueger and Morel, members. Economic and Infrastructure Development — Council member Morrell, chair; Council member Ayala, vice chair; Council members Denson, Herrera and Yambe, members. Health and Human Services — Council member Hitchen, chair; Council member Ayala, vice chair; Council members Kuver, Herrera and Yambe, members. Public Safety — Council member Herrera, chair; Council member Dunson, vice chair; Council members Morrell, Hitchen and Yambe, members. The resolution notes that committee days and times remain the same.
Council member Denson moved adoption of the resolution; the motion was seconded. With no public comment, the roll-call vote was taken: Council member Denson — aye; Council member Herrera — aye; Council member Yambe — aye; Council member Ayala — aye; Council member Kuber — aye; Council member Morell — aye; Council member Hitchin — aye. The clerk announced the result as seven ayes, zero nays.
Council members noted committees are where much of the council’s work is prepared. The council indicated the committee work is expected to begin in February under the terms of the adopted resolution.
No members of the public spoke on the resolution during the public hearing period.
