San Juan County Health Department leadership briefed the Board of Health on a planned department-wide reimagining process intended to update strategic direction, improve cross-division collaboration and produce a concrete implementation plan.
Mark (health department staff) said the department has not updated its strategic plan since 2018, and that more than half of staff are new since that time. The department has new leadership and new, dedicated funding streams (including foundational public-health funding and new housing supports), which leadership said make this an appropriate moment to reassess structure and priorities.
The department has hired Caliberry Consulting, which facilitated the 2018 planning, to lead a multi-step process. The consulting engagement will use DISC assessments with leadership, division-level mapping sessions, and multiple all-staff meetings to develop a reimagined plan. The timeline presented to the Board sets a plan completion date in June, followed by an implementation phase in which the department will track and act on priority items.
Mark said expected outcomes include a clear strategic direction, division-level strategies, improved team collaboration and a practical implementation plan. He emphasized that the department intends to link any plan to implementation steps rather than producing a document that is not acted on.
Ending: Board members expressed support for team-building and noted the county could learn from the department's approach; the department said it will share updates with the Board and seek Board input during the process.
