The Board voted on a series of personnel actions and hiring-freeze exceptions during the Jan. 13 meeting, approving multiple position requests while denying one corrections officer request. Key outcomes included:
- Approval (3-0) of a new County Engineer position (Public Works) and approval (3-0) of a separate Director of Public Works position, splitting duties previously held in a combined role. Commissioners asked HR to begin advertising both positions promptly.
- Direction to advertise two recruitment incentives: a possible relocation reimbursement (per county practice) and a negotiable starting vacation bank (used previously at smaller amounts); commissioners deferred larger sign-on bonuses and asked staff to keep the language open for negotiation.
- Approval (3-0) to fill Technology Services positions tied to the county ERP project: a Project Manager (to lead ERP implementation) and a System Support Technician (to support ongoing county systems). Commissioners noted the county built these into IT budget plans.
- Approval (3-0) for two Juvenile Justice Center (JJC) shift-supervisor positions to restore supervisory coverage.
- Approval (3-0) for a Judicial Support Associate II (Probation) funded from the trial-court improvement fund.
- Approval (3-0) to hire one prosecuting attorney legal assistant at up to level 2 (department head discretion), while the office held another vacant assistant unfilled for the budget year.
- Denial (3-0) of a hiring-freeze exception for an additional corrections officer after commissioners concluded they preferred using overtime and attrition to achieve required reductions.
Human Resources Manager Josh Griffith and department heads described the operational impacts of vacancies and the rationale for each request. Commissioners stressed even-handed application of the hiring freeze and requested weekly vacancy reports showing current open positions and savings estimates to aid budget decisions.
