Clallam MRC sets March planting, schedules abalone dives and April HAZWOPER wildlife training

The updates matter because they set volunteer recruitment, training and fieldwork timelines for the MRC’s spring and summer activities.
Elise Miller said the Edith’s Hook revegetation planting is scheduled for March 6, with fifth graders from Dry Creek participating in the morning and volunteers in the afternoon; volunteers may sign up through the Conservation District’s website. Organizers plan to plant about 3,500 primarily native dune grasses and associated coastal species to stabilize roughly 1.75 acres across two sites; this is described as a second enhancement planting for areas planted previously.
Jeff Ward reported that the county’s Pinto abalone work submitted its final 2024 report before the Jan. 1 deadline and that the MRC is coordinating a 2025 dive schedule with Puget Sound restoration partners. The current plan identifies eight dive days plus one weather day off the west of Port Angeles, likely in September.
Rebecca Mahan confirmed oil–wildlife (HAZWOPER) trainings are scheduled for April 15–16 at the Elwha Heritage Center. The training will include an eight-hour refresher for those with prior 24-hour certification and an eight-hour initial course for new attendees; staff will release a flyer and registration link once the contract is finalized.
Alan Clark and others also noted kelp-monitoring opportunities run through the Northwest Straits Commission; staff confirmed MRC members are welcome to participate in kelp data review sessions and training. The MRC will share signup links and additional outreach materials to recruit volunteers for these events.
The committee asked staff to circulate sign-up links and confirm whether additional volunteers are needed for specific field days.
