County staff described four personnel cases: (1) a long‑term licensed nursing assistant (LNA) whose FMLA had been exhausted and who experienced a medical event on Dec. 22, 2024; (2) a part‑time/per‑diem LNA scheduled for a total knee replacement beginning Jan. 24 and not eligible for FMLA; (3) a full‑time environmental services employee who had knee surgery Dec. 26 and whose FMLA was exhausted; and (4) a licensed practical nurse (LPN) requesting paid leave to travel to the Philippines from April 5 to May 24, 2025, to visit a parent (not an FMLA qualifying event).
Under county policy described at the meeting, commissioners may authorize up to an eight‑week paid leave of absence for employees who do not qualify for FMLA; extensions of up to two additional weeks may be considered later. The board approved each requested leave by recorded voice vote: Commissioner Clark, Commissioner Stewart and Commissioner DeBernardo each voted yes on the motions as presented.
Meeting notes say some employees have earned time on the books and will receive pay from accrued vacation or sick time where applicable. Commissioners signaled they would revisit any requests for extensions if necessary.
