Kim Bocat, representing the Cowlitz County Event Center, briefed the Board of County Commissioners on Feb. 3 about the fair and rodeo advisory boards and recent volunteer renewals.
Bocat said the fair board and rodeo board are advisory bodies that assist in producing the county fair and the annual rodeo. The fair board meets the first Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m.; the rodeo board meets the last Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. Both boards meet at the Event Center and their meetings are open to the public.
Bocat said the rodeo board is more hands on — maintaining grounds and equipment, welding, digging ditches and other site work — while the fair board focuses more on production and sponsorship. The rodeo board currently has 11 members; the fair board is also near full membership with several active new members.
Commissioners discussed renewing a long‑time rodeo board member (identified in staff conversation as Bill) and emphasized that volunteering does not require board membership; members of the public can attend and participate in meetings. Commissioners thanked Event Center staff for outreach and noted the rodeo’s recent success in selling out several nights, which staff attributed to online ticketing, sponsorships, and promotional efforts.
No formal board action was taken beyond the staff briefing; staff indicated they would proceed with routine renewals and encourage community participation.
